Howard Grant, chief trainer of undefeated challenger Olivier Lontchi of Montreal, said today "we're going to shock Juanma Lopez' world" when the two fighters battle on Top Rank's Latin Fury 9 championship card June 27 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.
Grant was at a press conference today in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
"We're fighting the top gun at 122 pounds in Juan Manuel Lopez," said Grant. "It's a great opportunity. Lontchi is going to put on a shocking performance."
Lopez, the WBO junior featherweight champion, has a record of 25-0 with 23 knockouts. He will make his 4th title defense when he takes on Lontchi, 18-0-2, 8 KOs. Lopez, the 2008 Puerto Rican Fighter of the Year, is one of the biggest rising stars in boxing. Lopez is 25. Lontchi, born in Cameroon, is also 25.
"I'm excited because this will be my first main event in the United States," Lopez said. "I really don't know much of Lontchi, except he is highly ranked and because of that I expect a tough fight."
Lontchi added "....I respect Lopez as a fighter and a person. Inside the ring, however, there is no respect."
Both fighters did their mandatory 30-day weigh-in at the press conference. Lopez weighed 134 1/2, Lontchi was 131. The 30-day limit is 140 pounds.
Lopez vs. Lontchi is promoted by Top Rank and hosted by Caesars Atlantic City. Four fights will be on the Pay Per View telecast.
