At the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, on the undercard to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.-Matt Vanda II, IBF super flyweight champion Nonito Donaire (20-1, 13 KOs) stopped south African mandatory challenger Moruti Mthalane (22-2, 15 KOs) in the sixth round due a cut suffered by Mthalane on the inside of his eyelid.
Donaire showed that he was the better skilled fighter early on, landing when Mthalane came in and catching him some more when he tried to get out. Mthalane landed some decent shots during the second and third rounds, not enough to change the tide. Donaire was more versatile, picking his punches when he saw the openings. Mthalane came back by having a very good fourth and fifth, outworking Donaire in close.
Donaire's face began to swell up by the sixth as he tried to change the way the fight was playing out. The ref called a stop out of nowhere, as there appeared to be a cut on Mthalane and blood on his face. The doctor stopped the action after he noticed the blood was coming from a cut inside of the eyelid of Mthalane, a spot that was too dangerous for the fight to continue.
