Earlier this month at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Filipino stars Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire were featured for the first time on the same pay-per-view card.
Pacquiao headlined the Top Rank PPV event, and captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight championship with a dominant performance over Jessie Vargas.
Donaire wasn't as fortunate in his fight. He lost his WBO super bantamweight title by way of a twelve round unanimous decision at the hands of undefeated mandatory challenger Jessie Magdanelo.
Once he returned back home to the Philippines, Pacquiao was very critical of Donaire's performance - and he questioned Donaire's work ethic.
“Don’t be lazy and always go hard in training,” Pacquiao said to The Manila Times. “In boxing, you cannot take your training lightly and you can’t be lazy. You have to train hard and wisely. Boxing is no joke. Whoever your trainer is if you don’t train seriously, you’ll end up with nothing. I’m hoping he’ll train seriously if he’s determined to come back.”
“Magdaleno is a good undefeated fighter and hungry. Donaire took his opponent for granted and I don’t know why. His footwork was heavy, no air and there’s no timing."
Donaire has no issue with anyone voicing their opinion about the fight - but he does take issue with anyone voicing their opinion about his work ethic - especially if the person in question was not actually present at the training camp.
"People don't understand that we have a game plan and you follow that game plan. People may look at it as lazy, but we worked really hard in that camp. I think people don't really have the proper opinion to state if I'm lazy - if they've never been there [in my camp]. But again, everybody still has the right to state what they believe and what they see - and that's fair," Donaire told BoxingScene.com.
"But if you're going to state something [about me being lazy] without being able to see [the training] yourself, I don't think anyone has the right to comment if they haven't seen me and how hard I worked. I didn't get tired in the fight, I just didn't throw [more combinations] and that's something that I will correct."
"He does have his own opinion, people all have their own opinions, but from my personal opinion - people have no right to comment when they are not there [in my camp]. If they saw it, they would really know how hard I worked."
