The criminal assault case involving the Russian giant, the former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev, is finally over. Valuev was accused of beating up a security guard, Yury Sergeyev, in January 2006 in the parking lot of the Spartak sports center in St. Petersburg.
Sergeyev, 61, claimed Valuev attacked him after he was rude to the boxer's wife. The guard claimed Valuev knocked him down with a punch to the chest and then beat him on the head. The guard went to hospital where some bruises were found.
Sergeyev filed a lawsuit against Valuev for one million rubles (around $33,000) for the beating. In January 2008, Valuev was ordered to pay a 30,000 rubles (around $1,000) fine and 100,000 rubles (around $3,300 ) in compensation.
In January 2010, a new criminal case was set against Valuev, because Sergeyev claimed his old rib fractures came from the Valuev beating.
Fontanka.ru reports the court ordered medical examination could not establish a link between Sergeev’s broken ribs and the 2006 beating from Valuev. The case was closed when the findings were given to the court.
