Barely three weeks after stepping up for a late assignment overseas Junior Wright is suddenly without a fight for the time being.
The unbeaten cruiserweight from the Chicagoland area was due to face Micki Nielsen on May 2, agreeing to step in for originally scheduled Felix Cora Jr. The bout has now been postponed after Nielsen came down with a respiratory infection that forced him to withdraw from the bill in Copenhagen, Denmark.
“We are hoping the fight gets a new date, but if it doesn't (happen), Junior wants to fight the best in line,” states Dmitriy Salita, a former junior welterweight contender and Wright’s promoter under his Star of David Promotions banner. “He has shown the desire to fight the best fighters in the world no matter where they are.”
For now, the plan remains for the cruiserweight crossroads bout to remain on the table, pending a suitable time and location to reschedule.
“We are waiting for the new date for the fight,” confirmed Nisse Sauerland, Nielsen’s promoter. “We expect it to be in June at some point.”
Nielsen (17-0, 12KOs) is coming off of a 10-round decision over Julio Cesar dos Santos in February, his second straight distance win. All but three of his career bouts to date have taken place in Denmark, while Wright (13-0-1, 11KOs) was prepared to fight overseas for the first time in his career.
Chances are, a rescheduled date would land in Denmark or somewhere in Europe, where there is far more money to be made for such a fight. In the meantime, Wright and his team are also offering their services for a fight that would be much closer to home.
“Junior let me know that if the fight does not get rescheduled soon he would love to give B. J. Flores a Windy City welcome should the opportunity present itself,” notes Salita. “Junior loves Chicago wants to have an opportunity to represent the city.”
Flores is due to fight June 12 in Chicago on Spike TV as part of the Premier Boxing Champions series. An opponent has yet to be named for Flores, who serves in chief support to the U.S. debut of cruiserweight champ Marco Huck in a title defense versus unbeaten Krzysztof Glowacki.
