Boxing SA's chairman, Ngconde Balfour, has resigned with immediate effect.
The ministry of sport said in a statement on Friday the minister, Fikile Mbalula, had “thanked Mr Balfour for his sterling job and for steering the boxing sport to greater heights”.
Since he was appointed in September 2011, Mr Balfour and his team “have profiled boxing and ensured all the policy and programmatic bottlenecks are attended to".
A new BSA chairman would be appointed before the provincial and national indabas begin on August 23. The aim is to discuss a “turnaround strategy for boxing in South Africa”.
Balfour, a former minister of sport, said in his letter of resignation to the minister he was proud of BSA's "unqualified annual report this financial year.
"Integrity and good governance are important to me and I will never compromise those. May your support for boxing continue."
