CHICANITO FUNDRAISER
On Saturday, March 14, at the Double Tree Hotel in Orange County, Thompson boxing is serving dinner and putting on a live fight card in a charity event to help support former two-time junior-lightweight champion Genaro Chicanito Hernandez in his fight against cancer. The promotional firm puts on this event annually and last year’s dinner was in support of Victor Burgos. Alex Camponovo, the general manager for Thompson boxing stated via telephone, “It’s really a good event and this year’s event is in honor of Chicanito.”
TIMOTHY BRADLEY UPDATE
WBC 140-pound champion is always rock solid and is one of those dedicated type of athletes that stays in shape all year around. Camponovo commented, “He’s working out really light, keeping his weight in check, but there’s no sparring. He runs in the morning. He trains around noon to about three in the afternoon. He’s hitting the bag, staying in shape, and keeping his weight in check, but when actual training starts, sparring, he’s crazy, he might go eight weeks.” Towards the end of the conversation I sarcastically asked Alex if there were ever any motivational problems with Timothy and he laughed, “Hell no, I don’t have to worry about that.”
THOMPSON BOXING IN 2009
On plans for 2009, Camponovo commented “We’re trying to move up all of our guys. Juan Carlos Burgos (20-0) is going to be the main event on our show on February 27. He’s going for the IBA title. We just signed Mauricio Herrera and he’ll also be on that card and we’re looking at a couple of other prospects that we might sign very soon. We’re going to be very busy, we have eight or nine shows planned for the year.”
Notes:
Favorite Quote: Two-time world champion Tony the Tiger Lopez had a reputation as a ladies man around his hometown of Sacramento and once commented, “If there’s a hundred girls in the place and you ask a hundred to dance, 80 or 90 of them will say yes!”
I think Ricky Hatton deserves parity. He brings in so much revenue from the United Kingdom and the pound is a lot more valuable than the Filipino peso. And what’s Manny Pacquiao going to do? I don’t think he’ll fight the winner of Marquez-Diaz. The only other logical avenue would be to try to engage in serious talks for a bout with "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather Jr.
