Boxing has had some strong weeks.  The sport about to have its strongest week of the year so far, at least on paper.  Off paper, work must be done to keep pace with some stellar action.  Can Mosley-Mayweather and Hasegawa-Montiel live up to their promise at Welterweight and Bantamweight?

We won’t know until they do.  For now, the impact of recent results is addressed.

Digging deep as the fight seemed to be getting away, Sergio Martinez went from respected titlist to king to the Middleweights to top an interesting couple of weeks in the fight game.  Digging even deeper, Mikkel Kessler reminded all of why he is one of the most decorated fighters in the short but growing history of Super Middleweight.

While Martinez and Kessler added titles, it appears the unified Jr. Featherweight titlist Celestino Caballero has permanently set his sights higher on the scale while Andre Berto holds pat, and even gets a bump, with his latest title defense.

These fighters and more make moves in the BoxingScene Divisional Ratings and Results Update.

Notable Recent Results
03/13: #2 Alexander Povetkin (19-0, 14 KO) TKO5 Javier Mora (22-6-1, 18 KO)

04/24: #9 Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27 KO) MD12 #7 Chris Arreola (28-2, 25 KO)

World Champion: Wladimir Klitschko (54-3, 48 KO, Lineal/Ring/IBF/WBO)
Lineage Descends From: W. Klitschko RTD9 Chagaev 06/20/2009

Top Ten Contenders
1. Vitali Klitschko (39-2, 37 KO, WBC, 3 Defenses)
2. David Haye (24-1, 22 KO, WBA, 1 Defense)
3. Alexander Povetkin (19-0, 14 KO)
4. Eddie Chambers (35-2, 18 KO)
5. Tomasz Adamek (41-1, 27 KO)
6. Ruslan Chagaev (25-1-1, 17 KO)
7. Nicolay Valuev (50-2, 34 KO)
8. Alexander Dimitrenko (29-1, 19 KO)
9. Denis Boystov (27-0, 22 KO)
10. Samuel Peter (34-3, 27 KO)

Rating Notes… The biggest fight in the division is Klitschko-David Haye.  It doesn’t matter which Klitschko.  In a positive sign, Haye pairings aren’t the only excitement available…Like Haye a former king at Cruiserweight, Adamek boosts into the top five with his tough win over Arreola.  He’s a serious contender and, with Povetkin and the three titlists, it’s getting hard to say the division hasn’t made a dramatic improvement in recent vintage…Arreola exits the ratings having been soundly defeated in both steps up in class…the lingering problem in class is a lack of depth.  Heavyweight is better, but it’s also top heavy in terms of quality…former titlist Peter has won four straight since a decision loss to Chambers and re-enters at tenth…Valuev may soon be in a title eliminator for one of the belts with Cuba’s Odlanier Solis.  Solis’s girth suggests underachievement but his skills are elite and he could make some noise before year’s end.

Top Ten Contenders
1. Steve Cunningham (22-2, 11 KO)
2. Marco Huck (28-1, 21 KO, WBO, 2 Defenses)
3. Ola Afolabi (14-2-3, 6 KO)
4. Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (42-2-1, 31 KO)
5. Victor Ramirez (15-2, 12 KO)
6. Grigory Drozd (32-1, 23 KO)
7. Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-2-1, 10 KO)
8. Danny Green (29-3, 26 KO)
9. Troy Ross (23-1, 16 KO)
10. Denis Lebedev (20-0, 15 KO)

Rating Notes… The dissolution of a proposed Cunningham-Matt Godfrey fight for a vacant IBF belt looks like it will lead instead to Cunningham and Contender Season Four winner Troy Ross.  Ross may be the best winner the show ever produced and that’s a stellar fight…the winner versus Huck, whom Cunningham beat a few years ago in a good fight, would be welcome…Fragomeni and Wlodarczyk are set for a rematch, the vacant WBC belt up for grabs.  Their first fight was action packed…WBA titlist Guillermo Jones hasn’t fought in well over a year.  It’s not sure if anyone else has noticed, including the WBA…The whole Danny Green: Cruiserweight thing is a little funny; basically a series of barely over the Light Heavyweight limit fights against guys who were at their best at 175 and 168.  Green is always fun viewing but it’s tough to figure whether he’s a serious player at 200 lbs. or not despite four straight wins in class by knockout and eight straight dating back to 2006.

Top Ten Contenders
1. Chad Dawson (29-0, 17 KO, WBC interim)
2. Jean Pascal (25-1, 16 KO, WBC, 2 Defenses)
3. Tavoris Cloud (20-0, 18 KO, IBF, 0 Defenses)
4. Glen Johnson (50-13-2, 34 KO)
5. Bernard Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KO)
6. Antonio Tarver (27-6, 19 KO)
7. Adrian Diaconu (26-2, 15 KO)
8. Gabriel Campillo (19-3, 6 KO)
9. Juergen Braehmer (36-2, 29 KO, WBO, 2 Defenses)
10. Karo Murat (21-0, 13 KO)

Rating Notes… Dawson-Pascal is the premiere match of the year so far but it’s still far away.  In the meantime, Dawson can continue to garner shine from his 2007 win over Tomasz Adamek.  Given Dawson’s other big wins, the Adamek near shutout grows in stature with every new Adamek win…Cloud-Johnson should happen this summer but who knows at this point…Like Heavyweight, 175 struggles with a depth issue but that could change as Murat, who owns a win over Campillo, continues to come into his own.  Keep an eye out for American Chris Henry to move towards the top ten again along with Vyacheslav Uzelkov and Nathan Cleverly.  As any and all do so, Light Heavyweight’s entertainment prospects will grow.

04/24: #5 Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KO) UD12 #3 Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO, WBC)

World Super Middleweight Champion: Vacant

Top Ten Contenders
1. Lucian Bute (26-0, 21 KO, IBF, 5 Defenses)
2. Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KO, WBA, 0 Defenses)
3. Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KO, WBC, 0 Defenses)
4. Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO)
5. Andre Dirrell (19-1, 13 KO)
6. Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO)
7. Sakio Bika (28-3-2, 19 KO)
8. Librado Andrade (28-3, 21 KO)
9. Robert Stieglitz (38-2, 23 KO, WBO, 2 Defenses)
10. Allan Green (29-1, 20 KO)

Ratings Notes… The “Super Six” tournament rules all with one notable exception...Bute did nothing to lose his hold on the number one spot, eviscerating Edison Miranda in his last outing.  Can he come up with the foes to hold off Ward though should the American keep winning?  Ward has Green up next to close the second round of the Super Six tournament Bute should have been in…Kessler jumps back to just below Ward, his win over Froch a career and tournament saving performance.  That it was the best fight of the tournament so far was a nice bonus…Froch slips only a spot having lost a competitive affair after three big wins in a row, the last of them against the man just below him…Dirrell may consider Ward a friend, but his chances to advance to the semi-finals go through that scheduled Stage Three Super Six bout.  Could boxing be gearing up for a Brown-Blocker moment?  Based on styles, probably not but one can hope.

World Middleweight Champion: Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KO, Lineal/Ring/WBC/WBO)

Top Ten Contenders
1. Paul Williams (38-1, 27 KO)

8. Sebastian Zbik (29-0, 10 KO, WBC interim)
9. Giovanni Lorenzo (28-2, 20 KO)
10. Gennady Golovkin (18-0, 15 KO)

Rating Notes… A title reign which seemed to hold so much promise gives way to promising possibilities.  Sergio Martinez took Pavlik’s title in two-fisted style and has proven to make for a good fight with anyone.  There’s one fight in particular which most would like to see again…Williams, based on his win at Middleweight over Martinez late last year, leaps past the now former champion and longtime titlist Felix Sturm as the number one contender to the new champion….Williams-Martinez II must happen…Pavlik stated after the loss to Martinez that he’d exercise his rematch clause and, if he does, could make must wait…David Lopez, inactive for over a year, exits the ratings with former Amateur World Champion and 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist Gennady Golovkin cracking the top ten.

8. Vanes Martirosyan (27-0, 17 KO)
9. Joachim Alcine (32-1, 19 KO)
10. DeAndre Latimore (20-3, 16 KO)

Ratings Notes… Martinez remains at number one for now, not having officially left the division.  In a ‘how times changed’ bit of humor, there was a time where being the best Middleweight and best fighter who weighs 154 lbs. would have been the same thing anyways…Cory Spinks, despite holding the IBF belt, has been inactive for a year and exits the ratings.  Dzinziruk has also been inactive over a year but, after management struggles, at least has a fight scheduled…Foreman-Cotto gives Jr. Middleweight an event, boxing returning to Yankee Stadium and all, but it’s still a division in need of spark…Perhaps it can come from Angulo whose heavy hands continue to entertain…It could be that everything still ends up being about Angulo-James Kirkland one day.

7. Luis Collazo (30-4, 15 KO)
8. Vyacheslav Senchenko (30-0, 20 KO, WBA Regular, 1 Defense)
9. Jan Zaveck (29-1, 17 KO, IBF, 1 Defense)
10. Selcuk Aydin (19-0, 15 KO)

Ratings Notes… Mayweather and Mosley is for the rightful claim as Welterweight champion of the world.  Mosley earned de facto “the man” status when he offed Antonio Margarito and being sucked since shouldn’t have taken away from that.  Mayweather was the last lineal champ and retired without losing the crown in the ring…It would have been as such even had Mayweather stayed at rated fourth but, with Cotto’s move to Jr. Middleweight imminent and formally announced, he flips places in the ratings with Mayweather…Berto flips places with Clottey after knocking out Quintana; Quintana exits the ratings which makes room for Aydin.

8. Antonio DeMarco (23-2-1, 17 KO)
9. Kevin Mitchell (31-0, 23 KO)
10. Ji-Hoon Kim (20-5, 17 KO)

Rating Notes…
Edwin Valero is removed the ratings…Rolando Reyes, inactive for over a year, exits the ratings…Soto entered at nine having won the vacant belt.  His mandatory is the man rated directly in front of him and chances are Soto’s title reign lasts only until he faces Peterson...chatter abounds of a rematch between champion Marquez and Juan Diaz, 2009’s Fight of the Year.  It’s just the thing to kick some life into a stalled 135 lb. class…Ali Funeka remains high in the ratings despite a loss to a Joan Guzman who showed up two weight classes heavy for what was to be a Lightweight title fight.  The unprofessional Guzman is bumped from the ratings altogether; Funeka faces his own problems after testing positive for restricted diuretics …Katsidis is in real danger with undefeated Kevin Mitchell coming in May.  Mitchell is well positioned to fill some of the star void in British boxing.

7. Steven Luevano (37-2-1, 15 KO)
8. Takahiro Aoh (18-2-1, 8 KO)
9. Bernabe Concepcion (28-3-1, 15 KO)
10. Daniel Ponce De Leon (38-2, 32 KO)

* Attell’s record streak varies from 18-22 title defenses by source; the CyberBoxingZone records 20 title defenses while 18 is noted in numerous other historical records

Ratings Notes… Yuriorkis Gamboa continues to win and continues to defend a WBA belt he didn’t win from Chris John.  Boxing brings the silly like no other sport but there’s also plenty of serious.  For instance, Gamboa and unified Jr. Feather titlist Celestino Caballero is a serious fight and possible for the summer…Lopez, the man with whom dreams of future superfight paydays reside, has a serious fight of his own coming up.  Let’s hope Concepcion keeps all his punches fair.  He didn’t in his first title shot…The division’s best fighter, John, is sort of lost in the shuffle and has nothing captivated on tap wasting one of boxing’s unsung best...Maybe he can pray for whoever emerges from May’s Israel Vasquez-Rafael Marquez IV…Celestino Caballero made his anticipated rise to Featherweight and enters the ratings after an impressive debut.

2. Nobuo Nashiro (13-1-1, 8 KO, WBA Regular, 2 Defenses)
3. Simphiwe Nongqayi (16-0-1, 6 KO, IBF, 1 Defense)

9. Raul Martinez (26-1, 15 KO)
10. Malik Bouziane (13-1-1, 1 KO)

Ratings Notes… Nonito Donaire did what he was supposed to against a much smaller late substitute.  His originally planned foe was at least bigger, but Gerson Guerrero is well past his best and wasn’t much of a challenge either…that said, if Donaire does not move up the scale, the WBA ratings could produce an unofficial tournament of epic proportions…Donaire-Darchinyan II is a must and Nashiro is poised for a rematch of last year’s scintillating draw with Cazares.  IF the WBA rules were followed to a tee, the winner’s could and should face off…Jorge Arce holding a belt is evidence of why belts are always good for punchlines.  After losing to Darchinyan and then Nongqayi, he’s now a “world” champ?  The laughs just keep on coming.  It’s like first grade soccer trophies sometimes.
