Ernie ‘Gypsy Boy’ Smith’s death last Friday saw British boxing lose one of its most valued journeymen.  Smith has tested the likes of Jamie Cox, Gavin Rees, John O’Donnell, Kell Brook, and Nathan Cleverly in a 161-fight career, 13-142-5 (1).  The 31-year-old Worcester man committed suicide last week aged only 31; his last contest was a TKO loss to Marlon Reid in June of last year.

Nathan Cleverly turned pro with a four round points win over Smith.  The Welshman, who is due to fight Antonio Brancalion on the 13th of February, paid tribute to his former foe.  “I was only 18 at the time and before the fight Ernie shook my hand and said welcome to the pro game.  He told me it's a tough game and I'm here to help you start your career,” stated Nathan when recalling that pro debut encounter.

“Ernie gave me a tough fight in the ring and he could certainly take a punch.  He was brilliant for boxing - he helped so many future champions develop their careers.  I was shocked by the news.  The sport has lost a really great guy.”

This writer vividly recalls Smith pushing Heywood’s Mark Thompson hard in their first encounter.  Ernie introduced many a budding pro to the rigours of the sport and he will be sadly missed within the trade.
