Nathan Cleverly says he is out to take away Amir Khan's status as the best boxer in the UK.
Khan has claimed the spot with a string of world title wins which has seen him claim two belts.
But Cleverly believes the new season could see him breathing down Khan's neck.
The WBO light-heavyweight champion is set to make the first defence of his world title in the autumn.
And the young Welshman wants to become a multiple world champion like Khan.
"He's won his world title, beat some top-class, dangerous guys and just won a unification fight for another version of the title," Cleverly told the Sunday Mirror.
"He's not one of these guys who do all the talking but can't back it up and I respect that.
"He's probably the top British boxer at the moment but I want to challenge him for that mantle.
"In the next couple of years I want to be right up there and challenging the big American names, in big fights and unifying titles."
