During the recent Boxing Hall of Fame weekend in New York, promoter Frank Warren spoke with WBO/WBA/IBF lightweight champion Nate Campbell about a possible fight with unbeaten UK sensation Amir Khan. Khan must first win his upcoming bout with veteran Michael Gomez, and Campbell is heading in the direction of a tough defense in August against Joan Guzman.
"We spoke and he said he would like to make the fight," said Warren. "Let's take it one fight at a time, and when the Gomez fight is out of the way, we'll see what happens. What I do know is that Campbell's fight against Joel Cassamayor isn't happening, so there might be an opportunity. What is really important is that Amir focuses on next weekend."
Warren has held talks in the past with Campbell's promoter, Don King, and Khan himself, rated number-two by the WBO (behind Guzman) is very interested in fighting Campbell. During recent interviews, Campbell has made it clear that he will overcome any ring challenge presented by Khan.
"As long as they are talking about you, that's the main thing," said Khan. "I'd prefer him to be talking about me and saying that I'll lose, rather than not talking about me at all."
