Tampa, FL - Former unified lightweight champion and current junior welterweight contender Nate Campbell will likely sit out the remainder of his contract with Don King Productions, which expires next May 14.
Campbell held back nothing when asked about the situation.
"Man look here - f*ck Don King. He can’t do sh*t, and wont get out of the way. He tried offering me some bullsh*t to "maybe" fight Devon Alexander next year, but he had no date, no site, and no money specified on the contract, AND he wanted an extension.
“He's out of his fuck*ng mind thinking I'd sign some blank bullsh*t like that. He's got me mixed up with someone else. My man Terry even tried negotiating a buyout with him for the remaining seven months or so of the contract, and Don wanted more money than he's even paid me since I signed with him back in 2007. So f*ck him.
"I can sit, and he won’t get a dime. He thinks it’s a game. He thinks I forgot about the other $100k he still owes me, too. Guess what? I didn't. He just don't get it.
“Ain't nobody wants to work with his ass anyways unless they
have
to. He can’t get TV dates. And he cant even draw a gate because he sits on his ass until eight days before the show before even deciding where the arena is and put the tickets on sale, and then turns around and blames it on you, saying you can’t draw, and tries to use that to short your money the next time.
“It's messed up, I defended his ass for two years in the media, because that’s what you do when you are a team. You back your people in the press, and settle your differences in private. You don’t put your in-house dirty laundry on Main Street.
“But since we aren't a team anymore, I don't owe him that. And here's the thing. Come May 15th, I'll be signing with somebody else, believe that. And before long I'll have at least one, if not a couple of the (junior welterweight) titles.
"I've got at least 3 or 4 more years to fight at the level I am at, and then maybe I'll shut it down… or maybe not. So seven months ain't that big a deal. Besides, there ain't no TV dates for the rest of the year anyways, so we really are only talking about the 4 ½ months from January to May 14.
“But let me say this on the advice of one of my lawyers. I am not making a blanket refusal to fight during the next 7 ½ months. If DKP presents me a legitimate fight offer, I'll definitely consider it. I am not refusing all fights across the board.
“What I'm saying is this: I personally believe the odds of DKP presenting me anything that makes any sense is very unlikely, and in my opinion I will be sitting until May because I'm not taking any bullsh*t deals from him. And also we presented him a legitimate buyout offer on the table that he rejected, so the only thing left I am offering him is my ass for him to kiss."
Note to the networks and other promoters:
“When May 14 comes around, I wouldn't put it past Don to still send out his usual bullsh*t letters claiming we are still under contract, or we owe him a fight, or some other garbage.
“Well, Don King himself, in my bankruptcy case, testified in open court on the record that my contract expiration date is May 14, 2010. I have copies of the transcripts, and would be happy to have Terry forward copies to anyone who might be concerned about Don threatening to sue everybody like he always does.
“My contract expires at midnight on May 14, 2010, and I have signed NOTHING with DKP that would extend that time period by even as much as ten minutes, nor will I be signing a damn thing with him to extend anything. Indemnity and hold harmless agreements will be available from my lawyers if needed at that time."
