Legendary Hall of Fame trainer Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain is not in agreement with the ongoing situation with respect to Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.
Last Friday, Canelo was hit with a temporary suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
While training for his scheduled rematch with IBF, IBO, WBC, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, the Mexican star tested positive for clenbuterol in two separate drug tests that were taken in February. The fight is still scheduled for May 5th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Canelo has been ordered to state his case at a hearing before the NSAC on April 10th in Las Vegas.
The NSAC will make a final determination on whether or not Canelo will be capable of fighting.
Canelo and his handlers have blamed contaminated meat as the sole reason for the positive tests.
In recent years, other fighters like Francisco Vargas and Erik Morales have tested positive for clenbuterol and they were allowed to fight - and Nacho believes that Canelo should be treated no different.
"There is a history of other fighters who have tested positive for clenbuterol and they have allowed them to fight, so I believe that Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez should be treated the same, as long as he does not return any further positive tests and maybe they give him a fine, but he should be treated with the same standard," Nacho said.
According to Nacho, all of his fighters are warned that red meat is prohibited in the preparations for an upcoming fight.
"It is suspect that in every case where someone tests positive for clenbuterol - they blame the cows," Nacho said.
"I have absolute control over all my fighters, because when we have worked with specialists we have had bad experiences - so we are not looking for nutritionists or physical trainers."
