According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, Anthony Mundine (39-3, 23KOs) vs Ryan Waters (20-2, 12KOs) could become an interim-WBA junior middleweight title fight. The winner would be in line for a fight with full champion Miguel Cotto.
Waters has not lost a fight since 2006 and went unbeaten in his last 19 fights. Their bout will take place in September or October. Mundine, a former super middleweight champion, has been moving down in weight for the last few years and recently made his debut at 154-pounds. Waters' trainer David Birchell is delighted with the idea of a fight that could lead to Cotto.
''That would be special,'' Birchell said. ''This fight could lead to very big things for Ryan, including a world title shot with Miguel Cotto. We're really looking forward to it. Ryan is training well - don't worry, we'll have the game plan - and Anthony knows Ryan well enough from sparring against him that he'll turn up to fight.''
