At the Parc des expositions in Poitiers, Vienne, France, WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (26-1, 8KOs) of Panama won a split decision over hometown hero Mahyar Monshipour (31-4, 21KOs) to retain his title. Monshipour returned to boxing in December, which was almost three years after his brutal fight with Thailand’s Somsak Sithchatchawal in March 2006. The scores were 116-113 and 116-112 in favor of Moreno, while the third gave the fight to Monshipour 115-113.
According to ringside reports, Moreno was able to outbox Monshipour is most of the early rounds to build a solid lead. Monshipour was able to come back strong in the middle to late rounds and put a lot of pressure on the champion. The championship rounds were close with Moreno was said to have had a small edge.
