After years of chasing, Eric Morel finally has his shot at WBO/WBC bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel. Morel has tried for nearly two years to get Montiel in the ring. Morel, the WBO's interim champion, is upset with World Boxing Organization (WBO) president Francisco Valcarcel for allowing Montiel to take numerous fights instead of making his mandatory.
To make matters worse, Morel has received a threat from the WBO, that he has to fight Montiel in his home country of Mexico or face the possibility of being stripped of his interim status. The fight has a tentative date of July 17. Morel is not happy with the money. Top Rank made a winning purse bid of $100,500. Montiel will receive $80,000 and the remaining $20,500 goes to Morel.
"I've tried four times to fight Montiel, but the WBO has allowed him to take other fights. We had contracts. It seems like an injustice and I will let my attorney handle the situation," Morel said to Primera Hora.
