HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Two-time heavyweight champion Michael Moorer made quick work of his first fight since December 2004, stopping Cliff Couser in the first round Saturday night.

Moorer landed a counter right to the head in the scheduled 10-round bout at the Seminole Hard Rock hotel and casino. Couser dropped hard to the canvas, and referee Jorge Alonso didn't bother to count and ended the fight at 1:36 of the round.

The 39-year-old Moorer is 48-4-1 with 38 KOs. Couser's record fell to 25-11-2.

Couser, of St. Louis, pressured Moorer early and scored with lefts and rights to the head. With his back resting on the ropes, Moorer countered Couser's right to the body with his fight-ending shot.

"This is the reward of working hard to prepare for the fight," Moorer said.

Originally from Brooklyn, Moorer first won the heavyweight title with a unanimous decision over Evander Holyfield in April 1994, but lost the belt to George Foreman in his first defense seven months later.

Moorer won the heavyweight title a second time with a decision over Francois Botha in 1996 but was stopped in eight rounds by Holyfield the following year.

Moorer weighed in at 250 pounds, 11 more than Couser.

In another bout, former WBC heavyweight champion Oliver McCall stopped Yamplier Diaz in the seventh round. McCall (50-8, 38 KOs) stunned Diaz with a left hook then floored him with a short right to the head.

Diaz was unable to beat referee Frank Gentile's 10-count, ending the fight at 2:28 of the round.

Undefeated heavyweight Roman Greenberg (24-0, 17 KOs) stopped Steve Pannell (34-11, 28 KOs) in the third round after three knockdowns.

Undefeated heavyweight Mike Marrone (16-0, 13 KOs) stopped Ronald Bellamy (14-6-4, 9 KOs) the third round. Bellamy was down twice in the first round.
