Terms could not be reached for a bout between Fernando Montiel (38-2, 28KOs) and Eric Morel (40-2, 21KOs), who were slated to battle for the vacant WBO interim bantamweight title in the co-feature position of Top Rank's Latin Fury pay-per-view on March 28 in Tijuana, Mexico. Montiel will still appear on the card.
Morel on the other hand will also see action on very same day, March 28, but in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Morel will appear in a featured slot on the event being put together by Puerto Rico Best Boxing, and called "Night of Champions." DirecTV will carry it as a pay-per-view event. As previously reported, Puerto Rico Best Boxing were wrangling with Top Rank to stage the Montiel-Morel bout on the Bayamon event.
"Night of The Champions" will also feature Jose Lopez, Henry Bruseles and Manuel Alejandro Siaca.
"We are going to put together this great event with a fight for a world title, two former world champions will appear and other big prospects. Lopez will go for a world title before his people, while Siaca will fight for a regional title and Morel will fight in the prelude to a world title opportunity," Ivan Rivera, president of Puerto Rico Best Boxing, told Primera Hora.
