WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel wants a piece of Vic Darchinyan, who holds the WBA/WBA/IBF versions of the title. A piece of Darchinyan is exactly what Montiel may get. Montiel appears to be upset that Darchinyan signed on to fight Jorge Arce on February 7. There is no love between Montiel and his countryman Arce. The two have exchanged insults quite a few times through the Mexican press. Montiel told the Mexican media that Darchinyan must be afraid of him.
"There is only one explanation for all this - Darchinyan is afraid of me. I can't think of another thing. He said a lot, then got quiet and took another opponent," Montiel said to ESTO. Darchinyan has three of the four title at super flyweight. I have the other, of the WBO. A win over me would make him a quadruple champion."
Darchinyan's promoter Gary Shaw contacted BoxingScene.com and said Montiel could get his wish and become the second opponent for Darchinyan in 2009. In order to get his wish, Montiel must get past Nonito Donaire, who is the only man to beat Darchinyan. Talks are taking place to have Montiel fight Donaire in the early part of next year.
"Please tell Montiel to fight Donaire, and then after that fight - he is next, for Vic," Shaw said.
