Before a crowd of many in Los Mochis, Mexico, WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel continued to call for fights with IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire, and WBC/WBA/IBF super flyweight champ Vic Darchinyan. Last we heard, Top Rank was trying to put together a Montiel-Donaire clash for March. Darchinyan faces Jorge Arce on February 7 on Showtime.
More so than Donaire, Montiel appears to have a real desire to fight Darchinyan. He felt insulted when Darchinyan agreed to fight Arce. They may be countrymen, but Montiel despises Arce and the two have traded verbal blows several times in the Mexican press.
Montiel says that he is "not intimidated by Darchinyan's record that is filled with knockouts, including one that almost cost Victor Burgos his life, and the one that knocked out [Cristian] Mijares."
He spoke out and asked "for the chance" to show that he can overcome Darchinyan's power and beat him.
