Middleweight contender Willie Monroe Jr. wants people to stop pushing for Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26KOs) to fight Gennady "GGG" Golovkin (33-0, 30KOs).
Following Mayweather's WBO/WBA/WBC welterweight unification win over Manny Pacquiao, more and more people started calling for a fight between him and Golovkin, who holds the WBA/IBO titles at middleweight. Mayweather also holds the WBC/WBA titles at junior middleweight, but hasn't made a defense in that division since September 2013.
Monroe says Mayweather, who is 38-years-old and wants to retire after one more fight, has done more than enough in the sport of boxing and there should be no reason for him to move up for a fight with Golovkin.
Monroe was knocked out by Golovkin in six rounds on Saturday night.
"People need to stop trying to putting him up there with Floyd. Floyd has been world champion for 19 years. Nothing against Triple G, but he's been over here three years. Floyd has been a champion and representing this country for 19 years," Monroe said.
"Let that man live, let that man have his titles. He's done what he needs to do. He's one of the reasons why boxing is back on the forefront. He's conquered what...five or six weight classes. There is no reason for him to come up middleweight. He doesn't even walk around at junior middleweight. Why would he need to come up and fight a middleweight? Don't get wrong, Genaddy is great, but there is no reason for Floyd to do that. And I know Floyd, he's not even really a welterweight. He can still make 140."
"They said Pacquiao would be his briggest challenge. He beat him, now they say Gennady. If he beats Gennady they will go and find someone else. Let man live, give that man his credit."
