Light heavyweight contender Sean Monaghan (28-0, 17 KOs) is furious after learning that WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson (28-1, 23 KOs) finalized a deal to fight Polish contender Andrzej Fonfara (29-4, 17 KOs) in a rematch on June 3rd, in Canada.

Initially, it appeared that Stevenson would face Joe Smith Jr., who last year stopped Fonfara in one round, on April 29th at the Nassau Coliseum in New York. There was even a deal worked out where Stevenson's mandatory challenger, Eleider Alvarez, would step aside for one fight.

After the negotiations with Smith fell apart, Stevenson's handlers turned their attention to Monaghan. The negotiations with Monaghan had continued for several weeks and their fight date was expected to get rescheduled to May 27.

Monaghan was shocked at the recent turn of events, after Stevenson officially announced the rematch with Fonfara.

"Well it seems I got jerked again. The fight with Stevenson is off. I honestly always kinda doubted it was gonna happen. Was he gonna fight an undefeated guy, no. He fights a guy he beat already, who just got knocked out in one round! No wonder nobody respects this punk motherf***er. Whoever I get next is in trouble," Monaghan stated.

Monaghan has been out of the ring since last December, when he picked up a decision win over Fernando Castaneda at the Centurylink Center in Omaha.

Stevenson and Fonfara first met in May of 2014, in and the champion won a twelve round unanimous decision. After Fonfara was dropped and badly hurt in the early rounds, the fight appeared to be on the verge of being over - but the Polish fighter came back strong in the championship rounds and even dropped a tiring Stevenson.

Since their first fight, Fonfara had his share of ups and downs - but his career has been more positive than negative.

He won a ten round unanimous decision over Doudou Ngumbu, and then followed up that win with one of his biggest career accomplishments - when he knocked out Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in nine rounds in April of 2015.

Fonfara came back that October and won twelve round war that many saw as a Fight of The Year candidate over current WBA 'regular' champion Nathan Cleverly.

Fonfara's career hit a huge detour when he was shockingly knocked out in the first round by Joe Smith last June, in what many thought would be an easy fight against an untested Smith. Fonfara bounced back last month at the Barclays Center in New York, when he stopped former world champion Chad Dawson in ten rounds.

Stevenson vs. Fonfara II will be televised by Showtime, according to Stevenson.
