Since Saturday night, nearly every media outlet has reported their views on what's next for WBC silver light heavyweight champion Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34KOs), who knocked out Allan Green in four rounds.
When I asked promoter Kalle Sauerland of Sauerland Event, about Kessler's immediate future, he told me the following:
"You know, it´s not really up to us," said Sauerland. "It depends on the outcome of a lot of upcoming fights and also what the American TV network says."
There have already been reports that Sauerland spoke to Canadian firm InterBox about a possible fight between Kessler and IBF 168-pound champion Lucian Bute, who faces Carl Froch on Saturday in Nottingham.
It should be added to the mix that Kessler stated numerous times that he only wants to fight twice a year. In this case, Kessler is likely not going to fight again until late in the fall.
Add to that his history of injuries that led to numerous fights being cancelled or postponed.
Furthermore, Kessler´s low weight for the Green fight - 169-pounds - indicates that his future is at super middle and not light heavy.
My conclusion is that Kessler will face Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25KOs) - if he wins the upcoming WBA super middleweight clash against Karoly Balzsay, which takes place in July. Magee has become a recognized name in Denmark, with TKO wins over Mads Larsen and Rudy Markussen.
Should the winner be Balzsay, I believe Kessler will face another opponent to re-establish himself further - while Karoly, well known in Germany but not in Denmark, will be moved towards a fight against the winner of Robert Stieglitz vs Arthur Abraham - especially if Abraham wins.
