Featherweight contender Mikey Garcia appeared on a recent edition of The Boxing Lab, BoxingScene's official audio show. Garcia faces Jonathan Barros on November 10th at the Wynn Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Garcia was original scheduled to face Orlando Salido but the WBO featherweight champion injured his finger and had to pull out of the fight. There has been talk of the fight being rescheduled for Super Bowel weekend next February in Puerto Rico provided Garcia gets past Barros.
Garcia defeated Bernabe Concepcion this past March in Puerto Rico and told us that he had no problem returning to the island.
"They treated us very well in Puerto Rico. They met us with open arms. I wouldn't mind going there again. It was a great experience and a beautiful island. I don't care where I fight Salido. Its still a ring with 4 sides with ropes so it doesn't matter where it takes place," stated Garcia.
Top Rank would like to pit former featherweight champion JuanMa Lopez and former super bantamweight champion Wilfredo "WV2" Vazquez in an all Puerto Rican main event. Garcia sees that prospective fight as a 50-50 fight.
"It is an interesting fight. Juanma has proven himself to be a true champion and has had great fights. Vazquez also had his (title) reign. JuanMa has the experience advantage and Vazquez gave Donaire one hell of a fight. It was a close fight. I wouldn't be able to pick a winner but I think it will be a close fight," Garcia told The Boxing Lab.
The Southern California native said that he is comfortable making the featherweight limit and plans on staying there for a while. He doesn't think he has the frame to climb too many weight classes but could see himself retiring as a three division champion.
"I am not a big guy. I don't come from a big, tall family. I think I can do 130 and maybe 135 by the end of my career. I don't think I will go to 140 or 147. I'm not the big of a guy. I see other guys do that who have broad shoulders and are big boned. I just don't have those genes," Garcia revealed.
