Port Hueneme, California - Top Rank's future star and power puncher Saul 'Kid Dinamita' Rodriguez of Riverside, Ca. is looking for a big win here Saturday night to launch "a real big 2015." His trainer Robert Garcia says "Saul wants to win Saturday and show he is ready to step up to the big fights against top quality contenders this year."
Saul, 15-0-1, 12 KOs is taking on super featherweight Carlos Rodriguez, 9-1, 4 KOs, of Mexico to open Top Rank's Solo Boxeo Tecate boxing card which will be televised by UniMas at the Oceanview Pavillion. In the main event, super lightweight Jose Zepeda, 21-0, 18 KOs, of LaPuente, Ca, is taking on Orlando Vazquez, 15-5-1, 9 KOs, of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Top Rank is promoting with Bash Boxing.
Saul said he sparred with former champ Mikey Garcia to wire in for this fight at the Garcia Gym in Oxnard. Ca.
Mikey said "Saul is a strong, hungry talented fighter. He has confidence and he wants everyone to notice him. I think personally he's about to jump on the contender status real soon."
Saul, 21, has been noticed in Southern California. Fight writer David Avila of the Riverside Press-Enterprise named Saul the 2014 Prospect of the Year.
Saul was born in Los Angeles. His parents are from Mexico. His father worked in construction. Saul said he began boxing "when I was very, very young.
He added "I have a great trainer in Robert Garcia. I've seen the way he prepares fighters for the big fights."
Robert is presently training Brandon Rios in Denver. Rios is taking on Mike Alvarado next week in their third and decisive match. Robert's father Eduardo will be the chief cornerman for Saul on Saturday night. Doc Anderson will handle the cutman duties.
"I want to fight about five times in 2015," Saul said. "I'll do the fighting in the ring. My manager Cameron Dunkin and matchmaker Brad Goodman of Top Rank will work out who I fight to get where I want to go - to fight the best."
