New York- It was a triumphant return for former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (35-0, 29 KO's) and no one was more relieved than his trainer and brother Robert Garcia. After being out of boxing for more than two years, the trainer was satisfied with his brother’s performance.
“Elio Rojas (24-3, 14 KO's) actually fought good, he’s a good fighter,” Robert Garcia told BoxingScene.com.”
The trainer says there may have been a little ring rust but once Mikey found his rhythm, it was like he never left the ring.
“It’s two and half years so maybe there’s a little rust,” explained Garcia. “But Mikey adjusted himself to the fighter and the weight. Elio was fighting a very smart fight. Mikey got caught with a few right hands, Mikey was in there with a world champion who came prepared and come ready. He tried to win. Mikey adjusted and picked up his rhythm and got where he was before.”
So what’s next for Garcia? The trainer says any title shot at 135.
“Mikey wants a title fight,” said Garcia. “If that’s not possible, hopefully we get Mikey in the ring as soon as possible.”
So how soon should we wait for the return of Mikey Garcia?
“Hopefully we come back soon in October,” stated Garcia. “I know there’s a lot of rumors but right now he’s still a free agent.”
Both Garcia’s say they were surprised at the ovation Garcia received from the New York crowd being that his home base is nearly 3000 miles away. It just means the boxing world missed one of its favorite boxer.
“We weren’t expected that great ovation from the hands in New York, that just shows you people really missed Mikey Garcia,” said the trainer. “It’s awesome. I think Mikey’s on his way to being one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. I won’t say the best because there are a lot of great fighters but definitely one of the best.”
