On Wednesday night, Michelangelo 'Mikey' Garcia officially became official agent after a two year legal battle with now former promoter Top Rank, and he hopes to announce his ring return at 140 pounds for this summer.
Garcia not contractually bound to any promoter - although Mayweather Promotions has shown great interest in him, Garcia said he will now sit down with his team and think about the next step for his career after perhaps winning the toughest battle of his career outside of the ring.
"It became official [tonight that I am a free agent], tonight the lawyers confirmed that to me. I feel happy because I fought for what I think is right. I looked at my contract and it did not look valid to the extent that Top Rank was requesting, so I fought them until the end - until they surrendered," Garcia said to ESPN Deportes.
"This is for all fighters who are looking to beat their promoter, it was not easy - but like a boxing match it feels nice to win."
On his return, Mikey has been training for a long time and anticipates his return in the summer.
"I've been away for a long time, but I know I have to take things easy. I've been in the gym. I hope to return in the summer and I will do it at 140 pounds," he confessed.
Mikey fought for the last time in January of 2014 and since then had initiated a lawsuit seeking better purses for his career, which led him to sit on the bench for 27 months. He is a two division world champion and he was even listed among the best pound for pound fighters in the world.
