WBC lightweight champion Mikey Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) is already working hard for his highly anticipated fight with four division world champion Adrien "The Problem" Broner (33-2, 24 KOs).
The fight takes place at the junior welterweight limit of 140-pounds, on July 29. The venue has yet to be finalized, but Las Vegas and New York City are said to be the frontrunners.
"It's a good fight. I'm really happy with the fight and the opportunity they are giving me. It's an attractive fight that the public is looking forward to and has the elements to be a good fight, even the fight of the year," Garcia told Golpe a Golpe.
Garcia won his first world title at featherweight, and then picked up a world title at super featherweight and in January of this year he captured his third divisional belt at lightweight.
Broner captured his first belt at super featherweight, then grabbed one at lightweight - and then skipped junior welterweight by making a two-weight jump to win a world title at welterweight. After losing to Garcia's one-time stablemate Marcos Maidana, Broner dropped down to 140 and won a title in that division.
Although Broner has fought at a higher weight, and against bigger opponents, Garcia views himself as a bigger puncher - but he is in no way underestimating the power of Broner.
"I think Broner is going to want to box, use a lot of defense. I think once he starts feeling the power of my punches, he is going to devote himself to boxing, but he is a strong fighter who has fought up at welterweight. I can't go in there thinking that he doesn't bring power, maybe it puts pressure on me [to think he does], but I see Broner being well prepared. The fight is at 140 pounds, (Adrien) accepted the weight, and I think he will come well prepared and eager to win." explained Garcia.
