New York - After a two-year legal battle with his former promoter Top Rank, former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (32-0, 28 KO's) finally returns to the ring this Saturday in Brooklyn's Barclays Center. He takes on a former world champion himself, Elio Rojas(24-2,14 KO's).
Though Garcia is not overlooking Rojas, he knows there is work to be done. The fight is at 140 pounds but the plan is for Garcia to settle in at 135 pounds and win titles there for the immediate future.
"I do want to come down to 135 and fight for a world title," Garcia told BoxingScene.com. "I want to unify titles at 135."
Though he's had battles with his former promoter, he also acknowledges that there is talent on their roster they he may want to get in the ring with like a Vasyl Lomachenko and Terence Crawford.
"If Top Rank is willing to bring a fight like that and the networks want it, then yes I will be all in for it," stated Garcia. "I got nothing against Top Rank personally and I personally don't know any of their fighters so I have no issue with making those fights. I have nothing against anybody."
Garcia has also made it clear, he wants to come for the WBO lightweight title.
"The first name I come to mind is Terry Flanagan. I want his WBO title," explained Garcia.
The WBO has ordered a fight between Flanagan and Felix Verdejo who is promoted by Top Rank. Garcia feels Top Rank may keep Verdejo away from him so he may have to go another route for a world title should Verdejo win the belt.
"They might not want to make the fight but I want that title," Garcia said of Top Rank's reluctance to put Verdejo into a fight with him. "If he gets that title, I may have to go another route to get the first title than come back for Verdejo and [hope] Top Rank wants him to fight me."
