Former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson believes Floyd Mayweather is more than capable of being a top notch trainer.
Recently, Mayweather revealed that he wants to train fighters - in honor of the recent passing of his uncle and former head trainer Roger Mayweather.
Roger Mayweather died in March. A former world champion himself, he trained his nephew for 34 of his 50 professional fights - turning Floyd into the best pound-for-pound fighter of his generation.
Mayweather retired from the in 2017. That year he snapped a two-year layoff to stop UFC superstar Conor McGregor in the tenth round of a cross-sport boxing match at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
"As many of you know, I've had incredible trainers which included my dad and uncle. Due to the recent passing of my Uncle Roger, I've felt inspired to help those around me the same way they have been there for me throughout my boxing career," Mayweather stated.
"In a time where we must distance ourselves from others, it has allowed me to reflect on how I want to make a difference in people lives and help them achieve their goals. A true trainer wants the best out of their fighter and pushes them to the best of their abilities.
"I want to leave an impression on those around me and allow them to see their potential. I am new at training and so far I've been working with people with no boxing experience, therefore we are growing together. But I promise you, I will be one of the best trainers in the world."
Most of the top trainers in the sport of boxing were never top fighters - certainly not close to the level of Mayweather.
But Tyson believes Mayweather could make the transition.
Tyson credits Mayweather's clean lifestyle, which consists of regular training sessions, and staying away from alcohol and drugs.
"Mostly, the guy that's the great trainer is not the great fighter and that's why he becomes the great trainer," Tyson tells TMZ.
"I give Floyd a good chance because Floyd's a gym rat, that's all he does. You see him in the club for one week but he's in the gym every day for 25 years. Even when he goes out and party, he's back in the gym the next day. He does it in his sleep, this is what he do. His lifestyle is predictable to a long duration athletic range."
