Mikaela Mayer will bid to become a three-weight world champion on October 30 when she challenges WBA junior middleweight champion Mary Spencer at the Casino de Montréal, Eye of the Tiger today confirmed.
Spencer, 40 years old and 10-2 (6 KOs), competed at the London Olympics in 2012 and has exhibited steady improvement during her rise through the professional ranks. Even so, she’ll likely start as the underdog against one of the most accomplished boxers in the female code.
“Never in a thousand years did I think I’d get the chance to fight Mikaela Mayer,” she said. “I’ve followed her career a lot, and as a fan, I love her style — but what excites me most is that our styles mesh so well that this will be a truly memorable fight. Saying I’m excited is an understatement, and I hope the fans are too, because this will be epic.”
Mayer, 35, has lost only twice with both reverses coming via decisions that could feasibly have gone either way – to Alycia Baumgardner in 2022 and to Natasha Jonas two years later. Those defeats came in the UK but she subsequently gained revenge of sorts by twice defeating that nation’s Sandy Ryan to take her record to 21-2 (5 KOs).
She had targeted a bout Lauren Price, another Brit, to unify all titles at 147lbs but without that showdown forthcoming, Mayer has set her sights on a world belt in a new weight class.
“I couldn’t get the undisputed fight with Lauren Price, so rather than take an easy touch, I looked for the next best challenge,” Mayer said. “Beating Mary Spencer at 154 pounds will make me a three-division world champion, and although I may be on the smaller side, I have the necessary skills and experience. I’ll dethrone Mary and then head back down to welterweight to challenge Price. I will be stronger, sharper, and better than ever.”
Also appearing on the October 30 card is Wilkens Mathieu-Shakeel Phinn at super middleweight, junior welterweight Arthur Biyarslanov, light heavyweight Mehmet Unal and welterweight Christopher Guerrero.
