Southpaw Cristian Mijares is seeking a green and gold autumn to a fifty fight career, which has been punctuated by twenty five KO's for just eight defeats and two draws. With Mission Jhonny very much in mind, Cristian stresses that he must stay focused to avoid any risk of a withering fall, against Lestor Medrano at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, this Saturday night.
Lester, from Nicaragua, who at 27 is six years younger than Cristian, has a markedly more modest record of fourteen wins, with nine KO's, two losses and one draw.
However Cristian's best days were as WBC super flyweight champion. He came within an ace of defeating Victor Terrazas for the vacant WBC super bantamweight Crown in 2013, knocking valiant Victor down in the final round, but then clowning instead of following up. And dropping a very close split decision in the end.
The margin was a lot wider in March of this year at the MGM Grand when Cristian had to draw on every scrap of his considerable defensive skills to fend off a younger, more powerful, heavier punching WBC super bantamweight Champion Leo Santa Cruz who coasted to a dominant UD.
Cristian who's now campaigning as a featherweight, says this upcoming fight, is a step in the right direction towards Jhonny who he describes as: "a superb champion whom I respect as a bóxer and a person. He's intelligent and very competitive."
Cristian says that if given the opportunity to fight Jhonny Gonzalez, he'd be a much sterner test than Jorge "Travieso" Arce.
