Mexican veteran Cristian Mijares (58-8-2, 26 KOs) has expressed his desire to retire from boxing as a world champion.
As BoxingScene.com previously reported, there are ongoing discussions for Mijares to fight WBC super featherweight world champion Miguel 'Alacran' Berchelt.
"We will see, in the negotiations we are at 90 percent. The fight has been mentioned to happen at the national level, so in the meantime we are preparing in the gym, staying calm, I hope the negotiations get finalized up and as soon as they tell me we will move forward," Mijares said.
Mijares, a former two division world champion, has won his last nine fights since suffering a decision loss to Leo Santa Cruz in 2014.
He expects a very tough fight against Berchelt, who really made a name for himself in the last twelve months with big wins over Francisco Vargas and Takashi Miura.
"He is one of the best of 2017.... a guy who is young, strong, who has beaten his opponents against all odds, such as 'Bandido' Vargas, Miura, hard world champions. For me it's an honor, it would be perfect if this fight were to happen," Mijares said.
"If there is a fight against Berchelt for the world championship, I will be happy and confident that I can win it. I'm looking to leave boxing because I want to. I will leave boxing and it won't be boxing dropping me. I'm excited, if that fight occurs I will be happy, otherwise I will also walk away happy."
"It would not be my last fight [if I win]. It was the plan to say goodbye in my area, where I started, where I became a boxer, but we do not know, there are many things that have to be worked out in my retirement. We will see what is achieved, but there will be a farewell fight."
"Everyone knows about my career, my beginnings, it was not to anyone's taste, they booed me, nobody trusted Cristian Mijares - but I became someone in this sport. Now I am at the point of retirement as a silver world champion, which is considered to be a super feather world title."
