The world lightweight champion of the IBF, Miguel Vazquez (27-3, 12 KOs), is already at the very strong stage of his preparation for his mandatory defense on March 12 against unbeaten Australian Leonardo Zappavigna (25-0, 17 KOs ) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The fight is part of the undercard for the WBA super welterweight battle between the defending champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico, and his challenger, Ricardo Mayorga.
Miguel Vazquez has studied the basics on his opponents and says he would not rule win by knockout because if it is necessary he will trade punches when necessary.
"It is difficult to face a unknown fighter while earning little money, but it is a mandatory fight, he is the official challenger for the IBF and we have to face him," Vazquez said.
Your people were negotiating a fight with Brandon Rios, Why did it not get done?
"Indeed that was the fight for me, but ultimately they decided to look for another Miguel, Venezuelan Miguel "Aguacerito" Acosta who is the WBA champion. I know the reason they didn't want it," Vazquez said.
Upon winning, what do you want in the future?
"After I win, I will then seek a unification with Humberto Soto who is the WBC champion. I've wanted that fight for a long time and I hope to get it after Leonardo Zappavigna, and why not, and then I'm ready for Juan Manuel Marquez."
Your namesake Miguel Acosta also wants a unification. Is he in your agenda for the future?
"I will remain at lightweight, and if Acosta wants to unify then I am available."

"I challenge Humberto Soto. That is the fight I want. I'm sure that I'll beat Leonardo Zappavigna and Soto. Sott is good and I want to face the best of my division, and I know I have the resources to win."
