Featherweights Miguel Marriaga and Guy Robb will square off in an elimination bout on August 27, Top Rank matchmaker Brad Goodman told BoxingScene.com earlier this week.
The 12 round bout will take place in Fallon, Nev., likely at the Churchill County Fairgrounds, and will air on UniMas, beginning at 11 p.m ET/ PT.
According to Goodman, the winner of the bout on August 27 becomes the mandatory challenger for the WBO featherweight title, which is currently held by Vasyl Lomachenko but likely to be vacated in the next couple of weeks. Lomachenko moved up to 130 pounds and challenged WBO junior lightweight titleholder Roman 'Rocky' Martinez on June 11, winning the title belt by knockout.
Unbeaten featherweights Oscar Valdez and Matias Rueda, ranked number one and two respectfully by the WBO, will battle for the vacant featherweight title on July 23 in Las Vegas, Nev. The winner of the fight must defend the world title belt against the winner of the Marriaga-Guy fight.
Marriaga (23-1, 19 KOs) won an eight round bout against Adones Aguelo in his last bout on March 12 in Burbank, Calif.
Marriaga has won his last three bouts in a row since suffering his only loss as a pro at the hands of Nicholas Walters on June 13 of last year. Marriaga challenged Walters for the WBA title, but Walters lost the title belt the day before when he weighed about a pound over the featherweight limit.
The 29-year-old Marriaga, who is originally from Colombia, trains in the Los Angeles area.
Robb (18-1, 8 KOs) also fought on March 12 card in Burbank, stopping Carlos Padilla after the fourth round.
Robb, who resides in Sacramento Calif., has won his last 11 bouts in a row since being stopped by Joel Diaz, Jr. in January of 2012. Robb does hold wins over three unbeaten fighters.
Marriaga is ranked number six by the WBO, while Robb is ranked at number 15.
Flyweight Oscar Valdez (10-1, 2 KOs), from nearby Reno, will also fight on the Top Rank/ Let's Get It On Promotions card.
