Trainer Emanuel Steward likes the idea of Miguel Cotto defending his WBA junior middleweight title against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on December 4. Top Rank who promote both boxers are eager to put the fight together. Chavez Jr. must first win his upcoming fight with Pawel Wolak on September 11.

"I think it's a good fight, it's attractive in terms of two important names in boxing. Originally we were looking at the possibility of a second fight against Pacquiao or perhaps Margarito, but now they will fight each other. Because Floyd Mayweather Jr. will not be available to fight against anyone this year, the next name on the list is Chavez Jr.," said Steward to reporter Carlos Gonzalez.

Steward looked at the list of available opponents for December and there wasn't much to choose from. Steward says the Cotto-Chavez fight would be a huge event if they held it in Puerto Rico, but it appears Top Rank is going to likely stage it in New York's Madison Square Garden.

"Michael already beat Shane Mosley and Joshua Clottey, so Chavez is the logical alternative. December 4 a perfect date. In fact, I would like for it to happen in Puerto Rico because people have no idea how the island supports Miguel. It would be a big event," Steward said.
