According to WBO president Francisco "Paco" Valcarcel, a deal has been reached for Miguel Cotto (32-1, 26KOs) to face Michael Jennings (33-1, 16KOs) of the UK for the vacant WBO welterweight title in February of next year. It would be the first bout for Cotto since losing the first fight of career in July in a fight of the year battle with Antonio Margarito.
The WBO forced Paul Williams to vacate the title because he is moving up in weight to fight Verno Phillips on November 29 for the WBO's interim-title at junior middleweight.
"Unofficially, they told me that Miguel agreed. It was reported to me that Frank Warren [promoter of Jennings] spoke with Bob Arum and they reached an agreement. It was indicated that the fight is happening in February," Valcarcel said to El Nuevo Dia.
Two dates have been thrown around for Cotto's return. The first is February 14 and the other is February 21.
If Cotto wins, a rematch with Margarito would take place in June.
