The return of former four division world champion Miguel Cotto (40-5, 33 KOs) is being targeted for a date in June in New York City, according to Bryan Perez, who is Vice President of Operations of Miguel Cotto Promotions. Roc Nation, who promote Cotto, are working out the details.
Cotto was scheduled to fight again on February 25 in Texas, but the entire HBO Pay-Per-View card was canceled after Cotto's opponent James Kirkland withdrew with a fractured nose that he suffered in training camp.
"With Miguel thank God that we've made to understand that during the next few days we will be formalizing a plan, it is likely that Miguel is back in the summer, we have nothing specific but the plans of Roc Nation are that he is fighting in the month of June. We are happy to have Miguel back and close 2017 strong for him," Pérez told ESPN Desportes.
"I do not want to overtake details but Roc Nation has an ideal plan, hopefully New York can be part of the equation so that everything ties ideally according to how Miguel's career has worked. [New York] has been spectacular for us, it has truly been our home for the past 10 years, it would be spectacular that Miguel would return in New York in June," Perez added.
As far as closing out 2017, which Cotto says will be his final year in the sport, they are still focused on landing a fight with fellow former four division champion Juan Manuel Marquez.
There were discussions to do that fight in 2016, but they were unable to reach an agreement on the weight. Marquez wanted the welterweight limit of 147, while Cotto was not willing to go below 150 at most. The fight with Kirkland was going to be a catch-weight of 153.
Perez would like to see both fighters go forward with their interim-bouts in June, and then collide in a big pay-per-view fight in the fall.
"Miguel has said that he is willing to fight with him. Marquez says that he will fight in June and we are planning to fight in June as well. We could do that fight by the end of the year," Perez said.
