Miguel Berchelt will make the third defense of the super featherweight championship of the World Boxing Council on June 23 in venue to be determined in Mexico, against former world featherweight champion Jonathan Víctor Barros of Argentina.
Barros holds a victory over Miguel Roman, who is Berchelt's mandatory challenger. The contest will take place in Mexico, at a venue to be determined.
According to ESPN Deportes, both the state of Oaxaca and the state of Yucatan remain as possibilities to host the contest.
Berchelt trained for weeks under the supervision of Alfredo Caballero in Sonora, and only this week confirmed Barros as the opponent.
Berchelt has a record of 33-1 with 29 knockouts, one of the highest percentages of knockout in the division, while the Argentine Barros boasts a record of 47 professional fights, in which he has 41 wins, 22 of them by the fast track, in addition to five defeats, just one by knockout, and a draw.
Should he win this fight, then Berchelt must face Miguel Roman in the mandatory fight.
Roman became the mandatory challenger last December in Las Vegas, after securing an unexpected knockout victory over Orlando 'Siri' Salido.
In 2018, Berchelt knocked out the Ghanaian Maxwell Awuku in three rounds, in a fighter where he contemplated the idea of fighting Barros - after promotional issues forced former champion Cristian Mijares to withdraw from the fight.
Berchelt, who made much of his career in Merida, has a streak of 12 wins with 11 knockouts.
Barros, 34, eight more than the champion, is coming back from a twelve round decision loss to Lee Selby at Wembley Arena. Selby holds the featherweight championship of the International Boxing Federation. Prior to that win, Barros had secured seven wins. Jonathan also has losses to three-time champion Mikey Garcia and former champion Juan Carlos Salgado.
To date, Garcia is the only fighter to stop Barros inside the distance.
