Many fighters had big plans for 2020. Unfortunately for most, those plans have been put on hold as the Covid-19 pandemic has shut down most sports for at least 10 weeks.
One of those fighters with big plans is Miguel "El Alacran" Berchelt (37-1). The WBC super featherweight champion was supposed to face unbeaten former featherweight champion Oscar Valdez this summer.
The 28-year-old has been staying in shape at his home in Mexico so that he will be ready to fight without the benefit of a full 8 week training camp. Travel restrictions between Mexico and the United States further complicate a potential Berchelt-Valdez showdown.
Berchelt's co-promoter Zanfer recently teased that they would start putting on shows without fans in Mexico on June 6th and that a date in late June was in the works for Berchelt against an opponent to announced in the near future. Berchelt said that he doesn't have a date set in stone yet.
"Those are just rumors. So far there hasn't been anything confirmed. I am working out at home, staying active so that I will be ready when I get the call," Berchelt told BoxingScene.com.
Even in the current environment Berchelt is confident that he will still be able to fight at least two times this year with at least one fight taking place on American soil.
"For sure. I am very happy to be able to fight in Mexico. Even with all of the problems going on I still think I can fight twice this year. After the fight in Mexico hopefully I can fight in Nevada or California once the commissioners say its okay. When they give Top Rank the green light we will be there," said Berchelt.
