Mexico's Miguel 'Scorpion' Berchelt (30-1, 27KOs) is potentially heading into the ring with the most experienced opponent of his career in the fall.
With already two fights for the year, Berchelt could be facing Orlando 'Phenomenon' Cruz (24-4-1, 12KOs) of Puerto Rico in his next fight. Berchelnt has now won nine straight since suffering his fist career defeat back in March of 2014 when he was stopped in the first round of a major upset by Luis Florez.
Berchelt became the WBO's interim super featherweight world champion earlier this year with a sixth round stoppage of George Jupp in Mexico. He is the mandatory challenger to WBO world champion Vasyl Lomachenko.
Cruz returned to the ring on Saturday night and picked up a seven round stoppage victory over Gabino Cota. It was his fifth win since suffering back to back defeats to Orlando Salido and Gamalier Rodriguez.
In his last fight, Berchelt picked up a knockout win on July 16 against Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo over four rounds, while one day prior Cruz got a stoppage win in seven rounds over Mexican contender Alex Valdez at the Kissimmee Civic Center in Florida.
Mario Abraham of Max Boxing, who is the co-promoter of Berchelt, advised ESPN Deportes that they are shooting for the date of December 3rd in Mexico but it all depends on how the negotiations play out with Cruz's promoter, Tuto Zabala of All Star Boxing.
They are also being a little cautious with the date, because former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been mentioning has been mentioning December 3, in Mexico, as the target for his next ring return.
