WBO Oriental bantamweight champion Michael Domingo (38-14-2, 16 KO’s) has been offered a fight against Mexico ’s Cuauhtemoc Vargas (15-2-1, 10 KO’s) on September 12 in Las Vegas.
Longtime Cebu resident and boxing man Tony Martin who is in Las Vegas training light welterweight Mark Jason Melligen for his upcoming fight said he was approached by American Boxing Promotion which had taken over the operations of Guilty Promotions for Domingo to fight Vargas at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Vargas is apparently coming off a long layoff after he lost to WBO super bantamweight champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez. Vargas retired in round six the bout held on January 19, 2007. Vargas was at one time the WBC Continental Americans super bantamweight champion.
ALA boxing gym patron Tony Aldeguer said should the fight push through, Domingo who is a bantamweight would have no problem moving up to fight at 122 pounds which is the super bantamweight limit.
Domingo was scheduled to fight world rated Nestor Rocha last November in California but the fight was called off after Domingo was diagnosed with hepatitis “B” which shocked ALA Gym’s Michael Aldeguer.
The fight was considered a stepping stone to a world title fight. A dejected Domingo returned to Cebu, was eventually cleared after a thorough examination by both private doctors and the ring physicians of the Games and Amusements Board and scored a ten round unanimous decision over Monico Laurente last March 14.
Among Domingo’s notable wins was a six round unanimous decision over Golden Boy Promotions undefeated protégé Miguel Roman on August 11, 2007 and former world bantamweight champion Ratanachai Sor Vorapin who was stopped by Domingo in the 9th round on September 14, 2008.
