Auditorio Miguel Barragan, San Luis Potosi, San Luis Potosí, Mexico - In a fight that some felt would be a major mismatch, Filipino contender Eden Estrella (34-6, 12KOs) pulled off a major upset by stopping previously undefeated puncher Adrian "Diamante" Estrella (21-1, 20KOs) in two rounds to capture the vacant WBC International super featherweight title.
Estrella was in some circles a 40-1 favorite over Sonsona. He was viewed by many as a rising star in the division with big wins in 2014 over former champion Celestino Caballero and tough countryman Dante Jardon.
Sonsona was throwing hard punches from the start of the contest and eventually clipped Estrella on the jaw with an overhand right that put him down and he was never able to recover his senses.
Estrella will have to do some rebuilding, while Sonsona gets a big win in the Mexico vs. Philippines rivalry.
