Wanheng Menayothin could very well be the best strawweight in the world. For now, the unbeaten Thai lacks the opposition level to match his supreme talent.
That remains true following his latest defense, stopping late substitute Jerry Tomogdan in nine one-sided rounds Tuesday afternoon in Bangkok, Thailand.
The bout remained in one direction throughout. Menayothin was aggressive when he needed to be, building up a huge lead on the scorecards while breaking down the visiting Filipino challenger. A left hook to the body put Tomgodan down for the count to end the onslaught in round nine.
Tomogdan (17-6-3, 9KOs) entered his first career title fight as a very late replacement for Young Kil Bae, who suffered an injury in early May and was forced to withdraw.
In all honesty, Menayothin could have fought both at the same time and still remain unbeaten in the end. With his second successful title defense, the 29-year old titlist improves his record to 38-0 (13KOs).
Menayothin first claimed the belt with a 9th round stoppage of Mexico's Oswaldo Novoa last November. Tuesday's outing came nearly four months following his previous defense - a 12-round decision over unbeaten but overmatched Jeffrey Galero.
The bout aired live on Channel 7 in Thailand, and via simulcast on its website.
