Wanheng Menayothin is on the hunt for a new challenger for his June 2 appearane in Thailand. His previously named challenger, South Korea’s Young Kil Bae (nee Myung Goo Yuh) was forced to withdraw after suffering an injury during training camp.
Menayothin (37-0, 12KOs) claimed his first major title with a rousing 9th round stoppage of Oswaldo Novoa last November. The 29-year old—who turned pro in 2007—is coming off of a 12-round decision win over previously unbeaten but overmatched Jeffrey Galero in February.
Bae (26-4-1, 21KOs) was never viewed as more than a stay busy fight for Menayothin while awaiting bigger game. The obscure challenger won 17 straight, but all coming versus nondescript competition and primarily taking place above the strawweight division.
Whomever Menayothin ultimately faces next month, the bout the will likely serve as his final permitted optional defense before assigned a mandatory challenger for his next fight.
Menayothin's bout—assuming it still happens—will air live on Channel 7 in Thailand.
