A few weeks ago it appeared that super welterweight contender James Kirkland would retain the services of strength and conditioning coach Angel Heredia who handles a number of upper level boxers including Juan Manuel Marquez, Jean Pascal, Jessie Vargas and many others.
Kirkland is training for his May 9th showdown against Canelo Alvarez that will take place in Houston, Texas. Heredia said that he was interested in working with Kirkland but the logistics didn't work out.
"What happened is me and Kirkland were close on negotiations but I am trying to focus on Jessie Vargas who's fighting in May so I told Kirkland that he needs to come to Las Vegas to do camp (where Vargas trains) or I won't be able to help him because being long distance you can't really get them physically ready for a fight," said Heredia.
"Kirkland and I made an agreement in December 2014 that he will have to come to get conditioning and have his camp in Vegas and train with either Roy Jones Jr or any other trainer of his choice. This was way before Gaby P negotiated the fight for him versus Canelo. Then he got the fight but he decided to train in Texas."
