New York, NY - The name Angel "Memo" Heredia usually gets a certain reaction from many when he gets mentioned in boxing circles. But when you talk to the fighters he works with, the strength and conditioning coach usually gets praise that comes from them.
At Thursday's final press conference for his battle tomorrow night with WBA "regular" middleweight champion Danny Jacobs, former beltholder Peter Quillin called Heredia the best addition has made to his team. Those words made Memo proud.
“It makes feel very proud and happy to hear him say those words,” Heredia told BoxingScene.com. "It means a lot from my experience and expertise.”
This is the second go around for Quillin and Heredia. The first camp between the two was for Michael Zerafa, where Quillin trained to make weight. Their entire time spent for Jacobs was a full strength and conditioning camp.
“It was a very intense camp,” Heredia said. “I worked with him last camp for weight, this time was full condition. We have him on a supplement program. We had an extremely good camp. None of this would be great if Pete wasn’t doing his job. He was very motivated and very hard working. He’s a really good friend. He’s giving me advice too.”
USADA random drug testing was implemented in this camp and Heredia says he was happy for it because as he says, he and his fighters have nothing to hide.
“USADA tested Peter 6 times,” stated Heredia. “They come and go. That’s the most we can do is try to take the proper testing. All my fighters get tested. Lucian Bute gets tested. Jean Pascal is going to be tested. I’m going to head out to his camp after this. They are doing VADA testing. Badou Jack gets tested by USADA.”
“We’re trying to do what’s best for the sport and benefit the sport but also. We’re trying to let everyone know - we have nothing to hide. I’ve never had anything to hide. There’s a lot of negative people and jealous people who may be jealous of my success. I’m surrounded with nothing but world champions and that’s speaks volumes.”
