At the AIBA World Boxing Cup in Milan, Italy, highly regarded flyweight amateur McWilliams Arroyo won a gold medal for Puerto Rico with an 18-2 decision over Tugstsot Nyambayar of Mongolia. Arroya had previously won a gold medal at the 2007 PanAmerican Games and was a 2008 Olympian for Puerto Rico.

It was the first gold medal for Puerto Rico in a World Boxing Cup tourney in 35-years. The last fighter to bring home gold for Puerto Rico was Wilfredo Gomez in 1974, who captured gold in Havana, Cuba. Arroyo has a twin brother McJoe Arroyo. The 23-year-old and his brother have been scouted by several promoters who want them to turn pro.
