Since December, McWilliams Arroyo knew he was close to another world title shot.
His career in the ring took a turn for the better from the moment he agreed to a deal with local promoter Miguel Cotto Promotions. He has already won three times in a row.
Now, with a new starting opportunity in his hands, the former Olympian will seek to make the most of it by finally becoming world champion for the first time in his career.
Arroyo will face Mexican champion Julio César Martínez (16-1, 12 KOs), who will defend his 112-pound title from the World Boxing Council (WBC) on August 15 in Oklahoma. It will be Martinez's third defense. DAZN will carry the event.
"Boxing is certainly [ a job where you can only do it] for a certain amount of time and I hope to box for another two or three years,” said Arroyo, who has a record of 20-4, 15KO's, to Jorge Ayala.
Four years ago, the man from Fajardo lost a decision to then pound-for-pound king Román "Chocolatito" González.
Arroyo also had a spectacular fight against Mexican champion Carlos Cuadras in 2018.
The last time Arroyo was in the ring, he defeated Juan Gabriel Medina by technical knockout.
"I want to achieve my goal which is to be world champion. I am very confident to go in there with everything. I will not have excuses. I am well trained to give my best,” he said.
Meanwhile, Arroyo said he was ready for whatever Martinez brings.
"He is an aggressive and active fighter. We have to be cautious and smart. The styles will collide. I like the fight, but let's see how the style collides with mine. I am ready for everything," Arroyo said.
