Main Events will promote the upcoming cruiserweight elimination bout between Thabiso 'The Rock' Mchunu and Ilunga 'Junior' Makabu, after having won a purse bid held Friday morning.
The 12-round cruiserweight clash will take place in the spring time in South Africa, with the exact date and venue to be announced in the coming days. The winner will face Grigory Drozd, who won the title with a landslide decision over incumbent titlist Krzysztof Wlodarczyk last September.
Main Events won a purse bid for the WBC Cruiserweight Eliminator fight for the mandatory challenger for WBC Cruiserweight World Champion Grigory "Pretty Boy" Drozd (39-1, 27 KOs). The 12-round fight will take place in South Africa in the spring (date to be announced shortly) between Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu (17-1, 11 KOs) of South Africa and Ilunga "Junior" Makabu (18-1, 17 KOs) of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Mchunu (17-1, 11KOs) has won his last seven fights dating back to March '12. The 26-year old southpaw enjoyed a breakthrough performance with an upset win over former heavyweight contender Eddie Chambers in an ill-fated move down to cruiserweight in Aug. '12. His last win came in a 10-round decision over Garrett Wilson last September, which aired live on NBC.
Makabu (18-1, 17KOs) hasn't lost since his pro debut, scoring 17 knockouts in his last 18 starts. The Congolese southpaw enters the biggest fight of his career on the heels of a 3rd round knockout over Tamas Bajzath last December.
